Cartilage Repair – Tissue Implant

Regenerative medicine company Histogenics Corporation, announced today the presentation of intermediate term data supporting the clinical efficacy of the Company’s NeoCart Autologous Cartilage Tissue Implant (ACTI) for periods of up to five years with no evidence of severe treatment-related adverse events in patients with grade III chondral injury to the femur (cartilage damage in the knee).
NeoCart® is an implant grown ex vivo (outside the body) from the patient’s own cartilage cells.

Disc Repair Phase 2 Trial Update

Report on intermediate results of clinical study:
The publication showed that a single non-surgical injection of Mesoblast’s allogeneic mesenchymal progenitor cells (MPCs) into damaged intervertebral discs resulted in significant regeneration of disc anatomy, increase in proteoglycan content, and increase in disc height, for at least six months.

“Cellular Therapy With Ixmyelocel-T to Treat Critical Limb Ischemia: The Randomized, Double-blind, Placebo-controlled RESTORE-CLI Trial”
Richard J Powell et al. Molecular Therapy ( April 2012)
From the abstract:
“Ixmyelocel-T is a patient-specific, expanded, multicellular therapy evaluated in patients with lower extremity critical limb ischemia (CLI) with no options for revascularization. This randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, phase 2 trial (RESTORE-CLI) compared the efficacy and safety of intramuscular injections of ixmyelocel-T with placebo.
“ Ixmyelocel-T treatment was well tolerated and may offer ...

Abstract
“Immunotherapy with interleukin-2 can cure 5 to 10% of patients with metastatic melanoma and renal cancer. Recent adoptive cell transfer (ACT) immunotherapies have improved cure rates in metastatic melanoma to 20 to 40%. Genetic engineering of T cells to express conventional alpha/beta T cell receptors or antibody-based chimeric antigen receptors provides ...

Kidney transplant facilitated by stem cells

Abstract:
Title: “Chimerism and Tolerance Without GVHD or Engraftment Syndrome in HLA-Mismatched Combined Kidney and Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation.”
Induction of immune tolerence by organ donor hematopoietic stem cells enables kidney transplant following immune suppression.
“These results suggest that manipulation of a mobilized stem cell graft and nonmyeloablative conditioning represents a safe, practical, and reproducible means of inducing durable chimerism and donor-specific tolerance in solid organ transplant recipients.”
